Nominate 2009 Everyday Zeroes (Vigilantes)

The "Angry Tammy" Tammy Lee Gibson case holds a special place in my heart... oh wait that's heartBURN. Sadly the worst vigilante of 2008, a woman with a mile long record of violent assaults and drugs, attempted to murder a man with a baseball bat, and who stated on TV she'd kill a man she barely knows, was canonized by the media and given little more than a slap on the wrist because her victim was a registered sex offender (never mind he was offense free for a decade before this and was convicted at age 14). Sadly, this only empowers armchair vigilantes to follow Angry Tammy's lead. I'd rather not have to fill THIS category, but I have a bad feeling this category will be filled thanks to the sad legacy of Angry Tammy and the cowardice of Prosecutor Sunni Ko, who bases the decision to plead out on the belief people won't prosecute. Thus, this "Award" may stand as the only mark of shame to a scumbag vigilante seeking his or her 15 minutes of fame. But I digress...

Paul Sandman:
http://www.tampabays10.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=100601&catid=8

Bartow, Florida -- Deputies have arrested a mental health therapist on charges he tried to extort money from a sex offender he was counseling.

They say Dr. Paul H. Sandman, PhD., of Winter Haven, owner and operator of Adjustment & Awareness, took advantage of one of his court-ordered clients.

Investigators said a registered sexual offender attending four years of therapy was one month shy of completion when Sandman was arrested for marijuana possession and was removed from the list of acceptable providers for the Department of Corrections. Nonetheless, the offender was assured he would get his letter of completion.

Citing financial difficulties and the need to move to Tennessee, the doctor said he would provide a letter of completion, if the sex offender paid him $2,500. He later dropped the amount to $2,000, deputies said.

The offender complained to the sheriff's office. Deputies interviewed Sandman and booked him into the county jail without bond pending a court appearance Tuesday.

Neighbourly act led to attack on innocent man

WHEN Edward Johnson got a letter saying he was in the clear over a sex allegation, it should have been good news.

Mr Johnson struggles to read or write and so asked his neighbour to do him a good turn and read it out to him.

But his so-called friend, next-door neighbour Paul Armstrong, misinterpreted the letter as meaning Mr Johnson was a sex offender and gave him a severe beating.

Not content with fracturing his cheekbone and nose, vigilante Armstrong and his girlfriend, Linzi Minchell, returned one week later and attacked him again for reporting the initial attack to the police.

Mr Johnson, who was not prosecuted for any offence, was left in hospital for two weeks with a fractured vertebra in his back.

Jailing Armstrong, Recorder Tom Bayliss said: “He has difficulty reading and writing and was asking for your help.

“He did nothing to provoke what you did other than to show you that letter.

“After the second attack he was in so much pain he could hardly move. The two of you were like a pack of animals. You are his neighbours and he counted on you as friends.”

Porn Sting Goes To The Dogs
Attempt to ensnare boyfriend comes back to bite Indiana woman

MARCH 18--Meet Michelle Owen. Concerned that an ex-boyfriend had used her laptop to search for child pornography, the Indiana woman asked police to search the computer for illegal images, but had her plan backfire when cops discovered two videos of her engaged in illicit acts with a dog. Owen, 24, was charged last week with two felony bestiality counts in connection with the video files, which a detective found in the laptop's "recycle bin." At the time Owen asked cops to search the computer, she was locked up in the Johnson County Jail on a public intoxication charge (which violated the terms of her release in a prior drunk driving case). According to a police affidavit, a copy of which you'll find here, a cop told Owen that he had found videos of her on the laptop and asked if she "knew what those files might be." Owen, pictured in the below mug shot, replied, "The one with the dog." Cops believe that the dog in question, Toby, is a beagle. After asking if she was "going to be charged with this," Owen said that the videos "were just something she did when she was drunk and barely remembers it," adding that she tried to "delete them the next day when she was sober." Richard Lauersdorf, lone protester of a church, makes ass of self:

Lone protestor determined to oust ordained sex offender

Registered sex offender to be ordained by Louisville church, many concerned
Tell Us: Do you think he should be ordained?

(WHAS11) - This Sunday, one lone protestor is walking the sidewalks outside the City of Refuge Worship Center on Goss Avenue where a registered sex offender was ordained as a minister two weeks ago.

It's a local story that sparked national headlines earlier this month.

Richard Lauersdorf isn't giving up on having Mark Hourigan ousted from the church.

He talks to the people filing into church at the City of Refuge Worship Center every Sunday asking, “Would you all like some information about Mark?”

Lauersdorf walks alone outside the church in protest of the church's newest ordained minister.

“The man's a danger to the neighborhood. He's a danger to children. And I believe he's a danger to the people that's inside that ministry," he said.

Mark Hourigan is a convicted sex offender. He served nearly five years behind bars for sex abuse involving an 11 year old boy back in 1998.

Now, more than a decade later, he's making national news for becoming a minister here in Louisville.

"God can use me to help people who need that hope, need that light," Hourigan told WHAS11.

He says through his recovery behind bars, he realized his calling to preach from the pulpit.

That caused a stir two weeks ago but now Richard Lauersdorf is left to walk this sidewalk alone.

“It concerns me, it scares me. ...that he's been put in a position of power since he's been ordained. And that's just not right," Lauersdorf said.

He says he doesn't know Mark and doesn't attend this church, he's just a concerned citizen of Germantown. Last week, church goers called the cops on him for harassment but he has a permit to protest on a public sidewalk. And he says he isn't going anywhere.

“I'm hoping I can stay out here as long as it takes to get Mark outta here," Lauersdorf said.

He says he plans to keep that permit up-to-date and vows to keep shuffling along this sidewalk every Sunday.

There is no law in Kentucky or Indiana against a convicted sex offender leading a church. Hourigan has said he's no longer a threat to children but has agreed not to be alone with them at the church.

Halloween Display Sends Message To Child Predators

Posted: 9:27 pm EDT October 30, 2009
EUSTIS, Fla. -- A mother in Lake County made an unusual Halloween display in hopes of sending a message to potential child predators.

Everyone who drives by Grove Street near Ward Avenue in Eustis sees what looks like a bloody person hanging from a tree. There is a sign next to the display that reads “Child Molester…What He Deserves.”

Cindy Hood said she was inspired to create the display by the case of the seven-year-old from a Jacksonville suburb, who was kidnapped and murdered last week.

“The Somer Thompson case really just ripped my heart out because I'm a mother of multiples, said Hood.

Hood says she hears of sexual predators taking advantage of children all too often.

“I know vigilante justice is not allowed, but this time of year, I think we can get away with it and expressing my opinion and what I really think needs to happen to these predators, said Hood.

There are some people however, who question if it's okay for children to walk down this sidewalk while trick or treating and see the display.

But people who live and work in the neighborhood say having a figure hang from the tree is just fine.

Anthony Nixon works across the street and isn't disturbed by the bloody mannequin dangling by a long rope.

“I think a lot of people think this way…I have no remorse for child molesters. I'm with anything, people coming together to do anything to fight off child molesters. Halloween is for the kids, said Dixon.

128 registered sexual offenders or predators live with a five mile area of the display.
